How to save, by turning your chiller off, during winter months? Save electricity, money and reduce carbon emissions, with a ROI of under 3 months.

Typically, free cooling is possible with installing a gasketed plate heat exchanger between the cooling tower and the chiller condenser. This system has many advantages, in protecting the chiller condenser and improving chiller efficiency, saving electricity and reducing maintenance costs of your condenser.

An alternative SIMPLE installation looks like this:
- During summer the Gasketed PHE is not in operation, chiller operates as normal.
- During winter the chiller is turned off and bypassed. The piping is just tapping on to the cooling tower and the chilled water lines. No complicated automation, the system works ON/OFF.

The Alfa Laval gasketed plate heat exchanger can deliver cold water to the point of need 1°C above that of cooling tower water.

Introducing the new Alfa Laval AC540 family of brazed plate heat exchangers – four new high-efficiency models, designed to work with the low-GWP refrigerant of your choice.

Environmental concerns and legislation aimed at addressing climate change are challenging the HVAC industry to increase its focus on enhanced performance and improved energy efficiency and to rethink its choice of refrigerants.

Increasing the use of low-GWP refrigerants, including natural refrigerants such as propane and HFOs such as R32, is one key aspect of addressing climate impact. Another important aspect is reducing the energy required per unit of cooling. The AC540 family is targeted to do both, in a kW range designed to meet the requirements of system builders.

CO2 is also gaining prominence in the market, having become the norm in commercial refrigeration applications, such as in supermarkets, and also has benefits in other applications, including large-capacity chillers and large heat pumps.

In terms of size, capacity and place within our offering, the AC540 family falls between the AC502 and the AC1000 and is ideal for use with multiple scroll chillers from 250-800kW. It is 750 mm high and 400 mm wide and works with a wide range of high-density, low-GWP refrigerants.

The slits on the aluminium fins interrupt the air flowing over the fin surfaces. This prevents the forming of a stagnant layer of air on the fin surfaces, and thereby increases heat transfer. The impact on the pressure drop and required fan horsepower is minimal, keeping operating costs low.

Alfa Laval WideGap gasketed plate-and-frame heat exchangers are suitable for fibrous fluids and for fluids containing coarse particles. The turning plate in the middle of the plate pack directs the flow into the two passes. The hot liquid (illustrated in red) enters through one of the connections in the frame plate. The fluid runs through the heat exchanger in two passes and then leaves through one of the connections in the pressure plate. The cold liquid (illustrated in blue) simultaneously enters through one of the connections in the pressure plate and leaves through one the connections in the frame plate.

As the fluids pass through the heat exchanger, heat is transferred from the hot media to the cold media. Countercurrent flow enables maximum heat recovery possibilities and very close temperature approach can be achieved. Temperature cross is also possible, meaning that the hot outlet can reach a lower temperature than the cold outlet. This can only be achieved to a limited extent with tubular heat exchangers making plate-and-frame heat exchangers more thermally efficient.

The fluids enter through the connections and portholes of the heat transfer plates. Specially designed sealing gaskets located between the plates direct the fluids so that the hot and cold fluids pass counter-currently in alternating channels. When the fluid enters between the plates, it passes over the distribution area. Alfa Laval offers two types of distribution areas: our patented CurveFlowTM and the chocolate pattern. Alfa Laval’s well-designed distribution area is one of the most important features of a plate heat exchanger. Its main purpose is to ensure an even flow of fluid over the entire plate while maximizing heat transfer efficiency and minimizing maldistribution and fouling. In the animation you can see that the distribution area helps the fluids to quickly fill up the entire cross section of the plates.

The animation shows the flow principle of a conventional gasketed plate-and-frame heat exchanger with a 2-pass configuration, but additional passes are possible. It is also possible to have a different number of passes on each side of the heat exchanger. For bigger models with higher flow rates, reinforcing partition plates are sometimes used which are not shown in the animation. Specialized ranges of the gasketed plate-and-frame heat exchanger are also possible such as our semi-welded and WideGap.

For very heat sensitive media, co-current flow is used in gasketed plate-and-frame heat exchangers. The benefit with this design is that the coldest fluid meets the hottest fluid when entering the heat exchanger, minimizing the risk of overheating or freezing sensitive media.
